- The number that you see stamped in to a piece of jewelry indicates the amount of purity of the metal that piece has (out of 1000). The higher the purity, the better quality the piece is.
- Copper? Bronze? Maybe a mixture of silver and gold.
- You are on the right track-- the purity is expressed in "karat" like 14 K, 10 K, etc. It is ratio how much pure gold versus how much alloy is added in (and higher the number, more expensive). 24K is pure (and really too soft to work with then, but they make jewelry that is 24 in the Middle East I know))... I found this table: Table of gold content in jewelry. Karat Thousandth Percentage or Pure Gold 8K Gold 333 33.33% 10K Gold 417 41.7% 14K Gold 585 58.3% 16K Gold 666 66.66% 18K Gold 750 75% 20K Gold 832 83.2% 22K Gold 917 91.7% 24K Gold 1000 100% 750 is 18K gold!
