does a claddagh necklace mean the same as a Ring?

I received a Claddagh necklace for Christmas Last yr from my B/F... its beautiful and has my birthstone where the heart is.. I was just wondering if it has the same Deep meaning as the ring we both are of Irish decent.. to me it does still stand for his Love,Loyalty,and Friendship
