- The necklace describes the relationship between Matlide and her husband with different dreams and desires in their lives. Matlide dreamed of being treated like royalty: servants, glamour clothing’s, and fancy dinners. But when she got married and ended up being poor, she was being selfish of asking her husband for things that he could not afford. So she ended up asking her friend, her rich friend, for the things.
- In 19th century French society, the only way a woman was able to attain money or social standing was only available through marriage. There was no opportunity to work (if you were middle class or upper class getting a job was NOT an acceptable choice for women). So if a woman like Mathilde wanted these things the best she could hope for was to marry a rich man. However, since she didn't, she was essentially stuck in that social and economic level that society imposed upon her. If social rules hadn't been so strict, she would have been able to attain these things without having to resort to borrowing them. However, it is also important to note that it is due to Mathilde's ambition and greediness that triggers her downfall and not just society. Although you could also argue that since the society placed so much value on material things and social standing, Mathilde was simply trying to keep up with society.
