Why does my hair make such a strange shadow when it floats on water?

When I float a stand of my hair on water the shadow underneath looks like a necklace with beads on it- there are random sort of circle shapes. Why? Does this mean my hair is damaged? Oh, extra info: my hair is wavy/curly.

2. There is a such thing as beaded hair syndrome (monilethrix) but don't worry. I think you would have known long ago if you had that. Were you doing the sink or float test to see if your hair is healthy? Supposedly if it floats it's healthy. So you're good there. You piqued my interest so I tried it too. Mine also looked kind of like you described. So I don't think you need to worry.
